D.R. Neans, DVM
Daryl Neans is a Central Texas native - he grew up just a few miles from where Central Texas Animal Hospital stands today. He completed his undergraduate work at Southwest Texas State University (now TSU) and at Texas A&M. He graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980 and then began his practice in Pflugerville.
In "the old days," it was just Dr. Neans and one assistant working from a small space in downtown Pflugerville (where the tax service is today.) He treated small and
large animals which took him to farm duty - emergency calls at all hours of the day or night. That, in addition to bull riding and roping in his younger days, can make a man
old before his time.
Now, Dr. Neans focuses on the care of cats and dogs and has surrounded himself with the best doctors and staff with whom to practice. This has given him a little more time to do some of the other things he loves - fishing, hunting and training his dogs. He is the consummate outdoorsman, preferring to spend his time traveling to quiet wilderness destinations.
He has 7 dogs (or as he puts it, "6 dogs and 1 Chihuahua"), 5 horses and some cattle.
Liza T. Banks, DVM
At the age of 12, I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian. While working my way through undergraduate and vet school, I held a wide variety of interesting jobs which reinforced my decision to have no other career but veterinary medicine:
- Milk testing at dairies (at 4 am!)
- Exercise horses at a paint horse farm.
- Refueling airplanes at the municipal airport.
- Teaching Assistant at Astronomy lab.
- Analyzing grass samples in a Range Science lab.
Both my undergraduate (Ranch Management) and Veterinary School years were spent at Texas A&M. Gig 'EM!
Following stints as a practice co-owner and as a relief vet, I have worked at Central Texas Animal Hospital since 1998.
I met my husband, Jon, in high school. We married 3 weeks after graduation and are celebrating our 20th Anniversary. Our daughter, Chloe, is an active, busy teenager who is very involved with sheep and horse projects in the Pflugerville 4H/FFA Club. Our pets include a dog, 3 cats, a horse and 2 lambs.
In my free time, I enjoy camping (I'm a "cool-weather" camper), canoeing, reading, photography and directing the Awana program at our church.
Tim Julien, DVM
Dr. Julien joined the Central Texas Animal Hospital team in June of 2005. He grew up in Dixon, a rural town of 1,600 residents in southern Missouri. He completed his undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis and received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 2004.
Dr. Julien has been happily married since 2000 to his wonderful wife, Christine, who is Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UT. They are the proud parents of Maya, who was born in May 2007.
In college, Dr. Julien was an All-American distance runner and ran the Chicago Marathon four consecutive years while in Veterinary school. In his free time, he enjoys trying to muster the willpower to get back in shape. He also enjoys good books and trying new restaurants.
Diane Coleman, DVM
Diane Coleman grew up in southern New Jersey and moved to Texas when she was 19. (She wasn't born a Texan, but she got here as fast as she could!) She completed her undergraduate degree at Texas State University and graduated from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2000.
Dr. Coleman has been doing relief work in the Austin area for several years and has helped us out in the past to cover our Veterinarians' vacations. She does such a great job - our clients love her, she's an excellent practitioner, and she fits in well with our team. So, we asked her to join our family officially. Dr. Coleman is passionate about veterinary medicine and about helping pet owners provide the best care for their babies. She also loves to share new techniques and procedures with the staff. She has a particular interest in feline internal medicine.
In her spare time, she enjoys painting, scrapbooking and reading romance novels. She is married to a computer whiz and they have a beautiful, active daughter named Kayleigh. They also share their home with 4 cats.
Sameer Modak, DVM
I was born and raised in San Antonio. While I was growing up and during high school I was especially interested in computer programming. During my freshman year at The University of Texas, I took a job as the head pooper scooper at a local veterinary clinic for some spending money and subsequently decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. At the beginning of my sophomore year in college I officially changed my major to zoology and quickly lost any chance at becoming a dot-com millionaire.
However, my job as head of clinic sanitation did lead to meeting my wife Janet, just before I was accepted to The College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M in 1997, so it didn't work out all that poorly.
After getting over the initial culture shock of moving from Austin to the Bryan-College Station metroplex, I quickly settled in to one of the most fun 4-year periods of my life. In vet school I concentrated on small animal medicine as much as the curriculum would allow. Outside of vet school I concentrated on just about everything else. In 2001, I not only graduated from veterinary school, but also married the aforementioned Janet. After graduation, I immediately returned to the Austin area and began working at Central Texas Animal Hospital where I have been ever since.
While not at work I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter, playing basketball, riding my bike, and just sitting at home watching TV or playing around the computer. At home Otis, my Australian Shepherd, who has been around since I started vet school, is in charge of security and making sure the couch doesn't move. His dog Max is two years younger, but provides Otis with hours of entertainment. Tiger, the cat, likes to keep to herself although the dogs watch her every move with unbridled intensity. Finally there is Arthur, our rabbit, who keeps me company while I work and play on the computer.
